In astrophysics, an event horizon is the boundary outside of a celestial body, such as a black hole, through which no light or object can pass.

On earth, an event horizon is simpler: it’s the imminent point from which there is no return.

I’m not sure the exact moment it happened, but it happened. All I know is we’re headed somewhere amazing together and there’s no turning back.

I don’t want the night to end, nor do I plan to be anything less than a gentleman. Not because doing so will win me favors. It’s what Kira deserves.

We talk more as we drain our second cups of coffee. She looks at me with red-stained cheeks, like she’s not sure what to say or do next.

I reach out and take her hand. My hand engulfs hers. I’m not sure what to do next either, but I know I’m not ready to say goodnight. “I really like you, Kira.”

“I like you too, Rowen. A lot.”

I gaze down at our twined fingers. Christ, her hands are so small inside mine. So soft. I can’t help but envision a hundred more things I’d like to do to my girl, but she might not be ready. And I’m not in a hurry to fuck this up before it even gets off the ground.

“Is there anything else you want to do, or…”

Kira’s grumbling stomach interrupts the question, and she presses her other hand to it. She giggles shyly. “Sorry, busy day. Guess I never got around to eating an actual meal.”

One thing I’ll make sure of starting right this moment, is that my baby never goes hungry. “I’ll take you out to eat.” I say it before thinking. Restaurants around here aren’t open this late on weekdays.

“Only thing open is the Midway fuel center,” Kira says. I’ll be damned if we’re going to get gas station food on our first date.

“I’ll cook for you.”

Kira brightens. “You cook?”

“I try.” I bring our interlaced hands to my lips and lay a kiss on her fingers. Standing us up, I lead her outside. The crisp night envelops us as we walk toward the parking lot.

“My home is pretty humble, but the kitchen’s fantastic,” I say. “You’re welcome to stay the night. No pressure, honey. But if you do want to, you may want to bring your own car. I have formation at four forty-five.”

“In the morning?” Kira gasps.

“Indeed.” I chuckle.

Kira exhales, sounding deflated. “Unfortunately I don’t have a car. Maybe we should do this another night?” She’s frowning as if I just kicked her dog.

“You don’t have a car? How were you going to get home, sweetheart?”

“I usually just call a rideshare. Sometimes Autumn gives me a ride.” She shrugs.

I feel a knot tighten in my lower stomach. Kira’s a smart, capable girl, but she’s my girl now, and I hate the idea of my precious one riding in cars with strangers. Before long Autumn is going to be a new mom and it won’t be so easy to offer her rides. Kira’s safety is my number-one concern.
